Although the origins of the Labrador Retriever are a little unclear, it is known to have emerged from crossbreeding among a number of local and imported breeds in Newfoundland / Labrador in Canada. Nowadays the main colors include yellow (off white, to butterscotch, to red), chocolate, and black, with a distinction between English and American-bred Labradors.

Labradors are larger dogs that shed relatively often, love the water and crave play with, and attention from humans. They have a reputation for playing well with children and are thus a highly sought after family dog. Labradors are one of the most highly complimented dogs, famous for their loyalty, patience, friendliness and reliability.

Before buying or adopting a Labrador, you should be aware that they will need a lot of love and attention, lots of food (but not so much that they become overweight), as well as a good deal of exercise, preferably a good walk or run every day.
